Speculation occurs when currencies are bought and sold by foreign investors for the purpose of making a profit. If foreign investors expect the value of the Australian dollar to increase in the future they may sell other currencies and buy Australian dollars. This will typically increase the demand for the Australian dollar and put upward pressure on the exchange rate. A reduction in Australia’s net foreign debt or lower interest payments on borrowings from overseas could create such a situation.
