About these motion pictures Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
The silent filming of vaudeville stage acts has given us some strong visual images from the early 20th century. This American Variety Stage collection explains and displays some of these fascinating films, which were shot between 1897 and 1920. The films support the Drama Years 7–10 syllabus dramatic concepts of vaudeville, comedy, physical theatre, and melodrama. Each of these sections contains playbill illustrations and examples of the genre, shown by film title. Information for the films includes still photographs and a plot summary. The Turkish dance and the Dancing boxing match films will make interesting viewing for the Core: Appreciation in the Dance Stage 6 syllabus. F. Crum

Bell Shakespeare Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Designed to promote a love of Shakespeare, this excellent resource includes descriptions of modernised performances and plenty of visual material. In Resources, teachers can find a short Synposis of selected plays, a Photo gallery, useful director’s input in Programme notes, and Reviews. The website is well laid out with valuable evaluative information and visual imagery to help students interpret the plays. The site will usefully support Drama syllabuses due to its emphasis on performance. A highlight of the site is an entertaining presentation of student work in visually interpreting a Shakespearean phrase. Performances in 2006 include The tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and The merchant of Venice. Educational resources for these and other plays were due online 1st June at time of review. F. Campbell

English theatre
The site’s purpose is to create a greater understanding of how a play goes from page to stage. Despite the obvious focus on the Canadian experience, it should prove useful for Australian educators. There are some interesting Activities, including script creation, characters and conflict, and some useful materials on Shakespearean verse. Infozone has a handy glossary. Also available are study guides on recent NAC English Theatre productions, such as Hamlet and other plays of international interest. One particularly interesting feature is the video interviews with theatre professionals accessed via Playwright’s corner, Director’s table, Actor’s green room or Design and production for the desired focus. Gender and genre: The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
A substantial essay on Ray Lawler's acclaimed 1955 play, this site provides a fascinating critique of a monumental piece of Australian theatre. The writer offers a well constructed argument on the style and the gender discourses present in the drama. Students of HSC Drama Topic 1: Dramatic traditions in Australia in the Core Study Australian Drama and Theatre, will find it a valuable resource. The historical significance of the play is outlined in a section subtitled Pretexts and Context, and the entire essay includes detailed endnotes for follow up research. Clearly academic in its presentation, it is a very worthwhile site for senior students. C.Sly

Katharine Brisbane: the future in black and white Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
With two of the eight texts in the Australian Drama and Theatre (Core Study) of the Drama: Stage 6 syllabus being products of Aboriginal playwrights, Katharine Brisbane’s essay is essential reading. Brisbane tracks the history of Aboriginal theatre and places it strongly within its social and political context. The plays set for study are Jack Davis’ No sugar, in Topic 1 and Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman’s The seven stages of grieving in Topic 2 . While the reference to these particular plays is brief, their place in contemporary Australian theatre is made evident in the course of this essay. L. Gough

While the information on this site is limited, it does offer a comprehensive synopsis of this American play by Thornton Wilder. There is an outline of the plot of the "intimate and compelling human drama" that takes the audience into the life of a New Hampshire family in the early 1900s. A list of the principal characters; summary of each act; and an overall critical commentary on the play, make this a useful starting point for students undertaking American drama. Well written and clearly presented, it offers concise, accessible information on this play. C.Sly

Vsevolod Emilevich Meyerhold - English Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
This is an excellent starting point for students of the new Drama Stage 6 syllabus for one of the practitioners, Vsevolod Meyerhold, in Topic 7: Approaches to Acting. The language may be a little difficult to understand, but it does provide a good initial orientation to the four basic elements: stage area; audience; actor’s performance; and dramatic substance; advocated by this revolutionary, who was executed for his art. Unfortunately, the dense pages of script do not make reading from the screen a comfortable process. Students and teachers may prefer to print a hard copy and deal with this resource in more manageable portions. L. Gough
