Overview
What are the characteristics?
Activity 1: Socio-cultural context
Activity 2: Personal use of the elements
Activity 3: Terminology
Frequently dance is created and performed in a characteristic way (style), identified with particular performers, choreographers or periods. It is difficult to give an accurate definition of any dance style, as most dance styles are eclectic and draw upon what has gone before them in order to produce something new. The major study performance component does not advocate, name or limit specific dance styles; the vehicle for the Work should provide for the further study of technique and performance as it relates to the study of dance as an artform. Further, the realisation of the major study Work involves the demonstration of movement skills, the manipulation of the elements of dance (space, time and dynamics) and the application of performance quality (the inter-relationship of the quality of line and control and variations of dynamics).
In order to heighten and strengthen your performance quality in a dance Work it is important to identify these characteristics.
It is important to gain an
understanding of where these characteristics have originated and what has been
manipulated to create a new Work.
The following headings have been
devised to assist you in your study of the history of dance.
Global
Where does this style fit into the
history of dance?
How and why did this style
originate?
Regional
What is the background of the
Work?
Describe the styles that have
contributed to the Work.
What are examples of the key
characteristics?
What specific terminology is
used?
Local
What do I have to do in dance terms to
perform the intent of the Work?
What movement examples are present
within my Work that have been borrowed from another style?
How would I have to adjust my energy
levels throughout the Work in order to satisfy the intent through the use of
dynamics?
The following tasks have been designed
to develop our awareness of performance quality in your Work. They should also
enable you to better understand the background and specifics required for a
major performance viva voce.
Listen to your accompaniment without moving and picture yourself performing the Work.
Whilst you are listening be aware of the elements of space, time and dynamics.
Listen again to the music and this time draw on a large piece of paper the floor pattern of your Work. Think about where in the space you need to begin and at which times you are taking up a small amount of space and when you utilise the majority of the space. Also be aware of the range of heights you utilise e.g. When are you low to the ground or when are you largely in the air?
List the variety of dynamics that you utilise within your Work. Try to adjust the dynamics so that they have the best amount of force and energy for the intent of the Work. Select one movement phrase and try to use the least effective dynamics in attempt to understand the best option.
Perform the Work without any accompaniment and identify the element of time in your Work. Are there distinct rhythmic patterns? Does it change time signature? Are you utilising all of the length of time in order to complete the movement, which also reinforces the intent of the whole Work or perhaps a section of it? Are there moments within the Work where you have to think in advance in order to remember technically challenging movement?
How does your use of the elements
support the thematic intent of your Work?
List any terms of movement that are style specific in your Work.
Give an alternative meaning or new term for the word.
Attach the quality of the movement that you need in order to execute it in your Work, e.g. Jete: big flying jump, light and never ending, spiral rotation of the spine, contorted and entwining.
Identify the characteristics of the style which uses the terminology to reinforce the theme, e.g. The intent of the Work is to show the movement of birds. The Jete section of the Work reinforces the impression of flight that never ends.
Select a section of your Work that best
enables you to explain and demonstrate the characteristics of your Work using
appropriate terminology.
