The dancer can sustain injuries by over stretching or compressing the body tissues (muscle, bone and joints). The forces generated in dance activity can result in injuries such as muscle strains, joint sprains, dislocations and fractures.
The human body has a great deal of structural strength created by the musclo-skeletal systems. Dance activity subjects the body to abnormal stress and forces, which can lead to injury.
Understanding the cause(s) of injury allows for identification of the potential risk factors and to develop strategies to prevent them. There are many reasons why a dancer may sustain an injury.
Classification of the major causes of injury
Posture and body alignment
Incorrect technique
Insufficient conditioning and training
Fatigue
Inappropriate environmental conditions
Nutrition
Emotional or psychological stress
