The muscular system

To understand how the body moves, it is important to have a knowledge of how the structures, actions and coordination of the muscular system affect dance technique.

Muscular function
The muscular system brings about movement and includes the voluntary muscles of the body (those which have conscious control). There are about 700 muscles in the body, which may be described in terms of their location, beginning and end, shape and function.

Action of muscles
The action of a muscle depends on its position in relation to the joint it works on. Each movement of a body part is the result of a number of muscles working together.

Muscular imbalance
The cooperation of muscles must be well coordinated. Each muscle needs to contribute the right force at the right time. The muscle (motor) control of muscles can be programmed. Dance requires sophisticated muscle coordination which needs training.
