Prescribed choreographers and works

In Core Appreciation in the HSC course, students have the opportunity to study specific choreographers and prescribed works from the past 200 years. Students apply the knowledge, skills and understanding gained from analysis, writing and criticism to the in-depth study of two prescribed artists and two works.

The two prescribed artists/works are studied within their sociocultural-historic context. Students use the skills of analysis as they study the distinguishing characteristics of each prescribed work, resulting in a critical interpretation and evaluation of the works. They consider each work as the communication of the choreographer’s ideas and intent and as a reflection of the society from which it emerged. The works also provide a vehicle for students to write about dance as they learn about the role of the dance critic.
