Resource reviews are provided for teachers to support their teaching and learning programs.

The views expressed by reviewers are not necessarily those of the NSW Department of Education and Training. Copyright for reviews is held by the NSW Department of Education and Training. Permission for reproduction of reviews in part or full for any purpose must be sought in writing. For further information contact colleen.foley@det.nsw.edu.au

Sites are listed alphabetically by title. Those reviews which note links to other sites, especially as a major part of the site, will require additional exploration time by teachers to verify specific curriculum applications relevant to their classes. The USER LEVEL descriptor, Professional, is a pertinent reminder of such issues. Please note that changes happen daily on the Internet. Sites come and go. We cannot guarantee that the following sites are permanent or are structured as they were when they were reviewed.

Answers @ ACE: interactive projects library (external website)
USA based, this web site must be used with due consideration for the differences in terminology and regulations. The Interactive projects library page has an extensive alphabetical list of topics and projects such as Repairing cracks in concrete and Removing a screw that’s stripped. Almost all areas of construction and building are covered on this site. Each topic has a Flash presentation, which always includes simple clear animations and recorded voice instructions. The dialogue for these instructions is shown with the animation. The user friendly presentations are organised by sections with Email a friend, Back, Steps, Pause,Restart and Tools needed icon buttons for easy navigation. The comprehensive information makes this a useful site for the Construction course, and some aspects of the Industrial Technology course. Users must be aware of the differences in terminology, regulations and measurement. G. Smith

NAWIC (external website)
With a broad membership base of construction related occupations, this inspiring green and purple site has high school relevance beyond VET. In particular, UNSW scholarship in News showcases the well written Martha’s essay; written by a university scholarship winner, it clearly describes the writer’s motivation and self recognition of skills in Year 9, and her pathway away from the traditional female work models. Designed to improve building skills and knowledge, and to inform women of News and industry developments, the site describes tertiary study options, awards, and emphasises the positive role models of women in construction. A Forum is available to subscribers, and information about this can be found in Members only. The NSW/ACT chapter does not make its newsletters freely available, but Newsletters from other states are available online. C. Thomas

Some assembly required: contemporary prefabricated houses (external website)
This website looks at the design and structure of prefabricated housing and presents a variety of approaches. Easy to navigate, the website has many visual resources. There is a timeline on prefabricated construction in the USA and details about prefabricated houses such as the FlatPak house and the weeHouse, a one room cabin. Biographies about architects and audio clips about the exhibits are available. There are many links to related websites containing detailed information related to the design and construction of prefabricated homes, and an extensive essay on the development of the prefabricated house.  It is a useful site for Technology students. YouthSafe: safety first or expect the worst (external website)
Developed for teachers delivering NSW VET courses and syllabuses with a strong Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) requirement, this information serves as a useful introduction to the study of OHS. Info for teachers presents a comprehensive overview on how to use the site. Jargon buster is a list of terms and definitions relevant to the study of OHS. Students with special learning needs would particularly benefit from the hands-on approach of OHS crossword, Safety first game, Student activities and Case studies. Students who would benefit from extension material may find OHS net a useful link. Teachers of Stage 5 Industrial Technology and Food Technology, and Stage 4 Technology (Mandatory) may find some of the activities useful when addressing OHS issues in the practical experiences which are mandatory in these syllabus areas.
