Recreation and leisure: sample reading & responding answers

 

Sample task 1

1. The writer usually plays ball games with his friends on Saturday mornings. In summer, they play cricket and in winter, they play tennis.

2. He or she intended to buy new clothes last Saturday. He or she did not buy more because the clothes were too expensive in the department store.

3. He or she has lunch at a Chinese restaurant. He or she likes this restaurant because he or she likes southern Chinese food and can speak Chinese with the waiters.

4. He or she intends to see the movie at 6.30 pm.

 

Sample task 2

1. Xiaohua's birthday is next Saturday.

2. They are going to shop for food after class on Friday.

3. The party will start at 5:00 pm. It will go for five hours.

4. Xiaohua would like a soccer ball, music CD, or a school bag as presents.

5. Xiaohua's parents will return home after 11:00 pm.

 

Sample task 3

In your answers, you should:

• reply in a letter format

• write about your interests

• write about what you do on weekends, if you go out with your friends

• write about the activities you do when you are with your friends

• write about the activities you would organise for a birthday party

• write about your life and your study.

 

Sample task 4

In your answer, you should:

• use essay format
  
  
• say that you are pleased with the chance of having a say in the sports offered
  
  
• mention 3 recreational sports you like most and suggest that they should be included in the choices offered
  
  
• state why you like the three recreational sports mentioned
  
  
• state the benefits these sports bring to students and why they should be included in the sport list.

 

Sample task 5

1. Xiuying was busy preparing for her examination whilst Meifen was busy entertaining her penfriend Jingjing from China.
   
   
2. Four activities Meifen did over the weekend (any four from the following):
   • buying souvenirs at the markets
   • looking around Chinatown
   • walking around in Darling Harbour
   • dining at Chinatown on Saturday night
   • catching train and ferry to a beach
   • going to the Opera House.
     
     
3. Jingjing does not like any other food. She only likes Chinese food especially noodles.
   
   
4. Meifen plans to go to China in December. Jingjing had promised to take her around visiting famous sites. She asks Xiuying to join her.
   
   Xiuying likes going with Meifen, but she has to discuss this with her parents first.
