Parenting and caring relationships

In society, it is not only parents who adopt the roles of parenting and caring. The changing role of women in the workforce has resulted in parenting and caring roles being adopted by grandparents, other relatives, teachers, child care workers, paid carers, and other significant people e.g. friends or neighbours.

In addition, there are a number of factors that affect parenting and caring relationships and may impact upon the quality of the relationships developed. Quality relationships rely upon people in the parenting and caring relationship knowing and understanding their rights and fulfilling their responsibilities. Whatever happens in each relationship, the people involved are more likely to be able to deal with issues positively if they remain respectful of each other as individuals. This is especially true in situations involving conflict or tension.

The following sections explore some of these issues.
