Groups in context

Researching community groups

The two previous sections of the syllabus for Groups in Context focus on identifying groups within the community, understanding the characteristics and features that unite them as a group, and identifying the needs of specific groups in the community. These sections of the syllabus provide a general understanding of the issues facing groups within society. Researching community groups explores the issues of particular groups in greater detail. As part of this study it is important to:

examine how issues impact on the wellbeing of the group
critically analyse how public policy and structures may hinder or support the group
propose management strategies that ensure the group’s needs are met and access to resources is equitable
develop plans that preserve the rights of members of the group and promote positive social environments in which the group can live.
