Student Support

If you are considering study at a tertiary institution, especially university, you've no doubt heard things like "When you get to uni, no-one will be there to help you." and "At university, the teachers aren't going to hound you for assignments!". Sure, when you study at university you have to be self-motivated and responsible if you want to do well. However, to say that nobody is there to help is simply not true. There are many support services at all universities and TAFEs and nearly all students have to use them at some time or another.

Individual institutions provide student support through a range of bodies including Student Associations, Student Services Centres and other campus centres. You may want to check out the student services available at institutions with courses of particular interest to you. You can expect services in each institution to vary but you are likely to find at least some of the following services:

Accommodation & Housing

New and current students can visit the accommodation and housing service for assistance in locating a suitable place to live.

Career Advice

For assistance with planning your career, obtaining work experience or further study information and job search skills contact the Careers Adviser at your college or university. You can gain knowledge and skills regarding resume preparation, interview skills and job application processes as well as find out what skills and attributes employers seek in graduates.

Disability Support

Educational institutions employ people to help disadvantaged students access and succeed at post-secondary education. Institutions have strategies in place designed to remove educational barriers resulting from gender, age, cultural and national background, socioeconomic status or disability.

Financial Assistance

Up-to-date information about Youth Allowance and HEAC can assist you to meet the financial necessities of post-secondary study. Also many universities and TAFE colleges offer student loans to assist you to meet the costs, ie: textbooks associated with your studies.

Health

Services can include general nursing and first aid, medical clinic, nutrition and dietary advice and sexual health information. You are also likely to find a range of educational and health related literature and obtain referrals to other community health services.

Study Advice

Study skills services are designed to assist any student who finds him/herself having difficulty in a specific course or subject or the student who wishes to become a more efficient and effective learner. Study Skills Advisers can help you with issues such as how to effectively balance study, work and social life or how to prepare and write an argumentative essay.

Welfare & Counselling

Counsellors are available to assist and support students during their time studying with personal, educational and vocational issues including social and family, difficulties, and work and study issues.
