Information about what this organisation does and lists of key contacts to find out more are available here. Results of annual surveys of the Australian
broadacre and dairy industries, including regional benchmarks are also provided. Areas of research include crop forecasts, the social aspects of farming,
farm management practices, and the impact of farming on the environment. Sources of more detailed information can be obtained by accessing
Publications, which includes the results of surveys on landcare and land management, and research papers, or by contacting personnel.
Most of these are print resources, which can be ordered, though some of the online abstracts contain brief information. The on line media releases

Animalbehaviour.net: resources for applied
ethology
The site is designed to deliver information about the behaviour of domestic and captive animals to as wide an audience as possible. For Agriculture Stage
6 students, the website offers detailed information on six commercially produced Farm animals: Sheep,
Cattle, Goats, Pigs, Poultry and Deer. Material in these sections
focuses on the behavioural profiles of the animals. The site would be particularly useful for the Stage 6 Agriculture Component: Animal
production and the study of animal production systems in the Topic: Plant/animal production. Students completing the optional research
project in the areas of animal behaviour or animal welfare would also find this site valuable. In Kids’ stuff, there is practical
and helpful advice for young students in the areas of understanding animal behaviours, and safely relating to domestic and wild animals. This section

Animal ethics infolink: a NSW Department of Primary Industries and
Animal Research Review Panel initiative
The site directs researchers, teachers and members of animal ethics committees to information about the operation of the Animal Research Act
1985, Animal Research Regulation 2005 and the Australian code of practice for using animals in science. The Animal Research Act
1985 governs the use of animals for a range of purposes including teaching, research, product trials, diagnosis of disease and environmental
studies. The site covers specific information about NSW animal welfare legislation as well as general information about legislation in other states and
countries. HSC Agriculture students may find the site particularly beneficial for learning about the ethics, welfare, legal issues and requirements of
animal production systems. It also suits the optional research project involving animals. Students will find the Three Rs section of the

Australia
Established by government and industry to ensure a competitive advantage and preferred market access for Australia's livestock industries, the site is an
excellent resource for Agriculture students. It covers all major diseases which pose a threat to the country’s livestock. Sheep, goat, cattle,
equine, swine, avian, lagomorph, bee, fish, mollusc, crustacean, and multiple species diseases are easily researched from the Disease
list. The best place to access the list is via the Sitemap. The large section dedicated to Johne’s
Disease may be useful for the Agriculture Stage 6 Component: Animal production. Students will also find that the Farm

Australia
Current agricultural information from the states’ agricultural departments and research centres is presented on
this site. Information is depicted via a vast range of fact sheets; these are clearly laid out and maintain a strong practical focus in tone and content.
Although the emphasis is practical, there is also information on operations such as budgeting and planning, and Future agricultural
systems. General farming information is also presented, such as the large collection of sheets on Salinity. Information is
predominantly on alternative and emerging agricultural enterprises, such as Wildflowers and native foods, Asian foods,
Organics, and Agroforestry. There is excellent material here for the Agriculture electives Innovation and

Australian agribusiness is involved in developing existing and new markets for agricultural products, domestically and internationally. This concept is
studied in the Agriculture: Stage 6 syllabus, giving this site high relevance. Perspectives articles and Agribusiness
review papers (lower left frame) provide articles on a number of different agricultural industries. Up to date, authoritative,
information on a range of industries, and related issues, such as export capabilities and potential markets, is discussed by the refereed articles. The
wool trade, livestock, potato seed technology, and the wine industry are among the topics examined. Acrobat reader is required to access these

This is an excellent agricultural resource written specifically for students. Although the information provided is
general, it would be an excellent starting point to introduce or summarise agricultural enterprises. Probably the most appealing aspect of this site is
that it is filled with Australian facts, Australian breeds and Australian market prices, making this site a very valuable teaching resource. The language
used is simple and the web layout is easy to navigate. The inclusion of a basic terminology list with every production enterprise provided makes this

Part of a more extensive site maintained by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, this page provides easy access to
Agricultural pests and feral animals. It is reached by selecting Bureau of rural sciences on the AFFA home page
(http://www.affa.gov.au/ .cfm), then selecting Agriculture and Food Sciences. With some exceptions, notably Pest and feral
animal management and The national feral animal control program, the bulk of this site provides a brief overview of the
environmental impact caused by a variety of pest and feral animals. Although the information is current and meaningful to Stage 5 and Stage 6 students,
much of this page appears to be a platform to promote the publications produced by the Bureau of Rural Sciences. This page is easily navigated and is a
useful resource for the Earth and Environmental Science: Stage 6 elective, Introduced species and the Australian environment. J.

Much detailed information on many broad subjects, including animal health, agricultural chemicals, and weeds, can be found in Technical
information. Students can conduct their own research into feral animals, disease, and pest control. Information is often accompanied by some
excellent images eg. infected plants, and feral goats. Students using Search are able to access over13,000 documents on the site.
Students could also investigate models that farmers might use to predict long term benefits and costs of changing farming practices eg. planting trees,

All about chickens for kids and
teachers
Designed for a wide range of ages and abilities, this comprehensive, interactive site has much to offer those wishing to learn about poultry. For senior
students, Oklahoma state university board of regents and Broiler chickens provide detailed information
about the suitability for production of a wide range of poultry breeds. Pure breeds of traditional utility poultry leads to much
practical information about running a poultry farm useful for Agriculture Stage 6. Many of the links are more suited to younger students, such as
Chickscope embryology. The 21–day chick lifecycle is particularly engaging. Here, clear information, diagrams and
easy experiments can be accessed. Teachers of younger students are supported with worksheets, a unit of work, songs and ideas for games and crafts. While
teachers need to preview choices within the site, this is a rich source of information. G. Harris

The Australian Biotechnology Association provides an Educational leaflets written for Australian school students. These leaflets, which
serve a variety of purposes, can be downloaded for use as the basis for discussion on environmental, ethical, and moral issues associated with
biotechnology. The leaflets could provide background information on what biotechnology and genetic engineering are, and how they impact agriculture and
everyday life. The site is a good starting place for those interested in these issues. A useful glossary of terms is included. This text site, updated in
July 1999, has links to other biotechnology sites in Australia and overseas. The information on these sites can be very technical, and exploration time

Australian dairy industry
A good source of information for students studying the dairy industry, this site also provides links to all major organisations involved in this industry
in Australia. Answers to a range of questions can be found through these organisational links. There is access to current farm statistics and milk
marketing statistics within each organisation. The parent site contains relevant and up to date information about milk marketing, milk export, and
related Health and nutrition. It is a valuable, attractive, well structured site for anyone interested in the dairy industry. K.

The site provides basic information relating to all major aspects of feedlots, including an excellent overview of the Australian feedlot industry in the
Briefing papers, which are found within Publications. The site’s main sections are Environment,
Feed commodities and nutrition, Animal health and welfare, Feedlot management and
Ethanol. There is also access to quarterly surveys which provide a detailed look at the feedlot industry. It is a well designed website
which will suit students looking for quick and precise information on feedlots. The site has many links to external sites which serve as supplementary

Plant propagation is a skill required by Agriculture students. This site gives helpful text and graphic information about different methods of
propagation for both commercial production and small scale production. Topics include: sowing seeds; taking cuttings; grafting; and handy hints. The
diagrams are detailed and easy to understand although they can be a little slow to download. There are links to: the homepage of the society;

Easily accessed text and graphic information on the role of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service in improving the quality of Australian
plants and livestock, and ensuring the health of plants, humans, and other animals is available here. Publications includes downloadable
bulletins, media releases, and reports which could help: track issues such as Rabbit Calcivirus; or map the outbreaks of pests and weeds. The site also
offers current information on: outbreaks, distribution, origin and control of various pests, diseases and weeds; export or import of agricultural plants,
livestock or food; and guidelines, legislation and international trade regulations. Schools provides: educational information on
Australian quarantine and inspection issues; game playing scenarios for students; lesson plans; a reference library; and resource information.
Downloadable interactive games allow students to conduct virtual experiments on screen. Links to other sites allow access to a range of additional

While much of this site is designed for vegetable growers, several sections provide excellent information for teachers and students of Agriculture. IPM explains integrated pest management in a useful diagram, and there are links to other sites that are informative and at an appropriate level for school students. In Consumers, students will find information on potatoes, labelling, and basic information on 14 products in What vegetable is that?. Statistics provides excellent data relating to vegetables grown in Australia. Teachers could use this for a range of activities, including graphing and investigating comparisons and trends for different cultivation methods and species. S. Bannerman

The site provides a wide range of information on most aspects of sheep and goat production, for both meat and wool. Agricultural Technology 7–10
students would benefit from the site in researching basic sheep, goat and cattle breeds, condition scoring for sheep and cattle, and classification
guides for lamb and beef. For Agriculture Stage 6 students, the information in Farming & research ranges across herd fertility,
growth, breeding, and animal welfare, through to environmental and farm productivity and meat processing. Within this section, Health and
welfare would be particularly valuable for students looking at pathogenic microbes and invertebrates. Fact sheets relating to welfare will help
students learn about ethics, welfare and legal issues. Student resources contains an excellent introduction to New Zealand geography. S.

Biodiversity and
conservation: a hypertext book. Chapter 9, Exotic introductions
Although much of the information presented in this chapter of the hypertext book, Biodiversity and conservation concerns the introduction of
exotic species of Plants, Mammals, Reptiles and Diseases to America, Australian
examples of seastars, rabbits, and the bushtailed opossum (brush tailed possum) are present in Exotics in Australia. The history of the
introduction of so many exotic species provided here explains their success, and includes the means of invasion through: container shipping; ballast
water; air travel; agriculture; aquaculture, and forestry. It provides good support for study of the Earth and Environmental Science: Stage 6

Both the general information and specific examples provided make this a valuable resource for comparison of biological control agents of insects, disease
and weed pests. Table of contents gives access to introductory tutorials, including: Insect biology and ecology:
A primer and Biological control. Photographs and detailed descriptions of over 100 biological control agents of
insects, disease and weed pests are also provided. Each is divided into one of four types: Parasitoids; Predators;
Pathogens; and Weed feeders. Information about life cycle, habits, natural enemies and effectiveness as a means of
control makes this a valuable resource for the Introduced species and the Australian environment option of the Earth and Environmental

Birchip agronomy online
A group of farmers, and representatives from industry and the government, are working together to improve cropping practices in Victoria, resulting is
the cropping demonstration and replicated trial plots located at Birchip. The replications, results and recommendations are available through this site.
New varieties are grown to attract interest. Agronomic research includes: crop rotation; the effects of sodic soil on cropping; and the effects of
herbicides and fertilisers on crop performance eg. fertiliser comparison on barley. Photographs of crop problems, such as yellow leaves, allow farmers to
compare their crops and work out possible causes. Solutions are suggested. Rainfall characteristics and how they relate to yields are included. J.

animals. Searching by the type of animal, breed of animal, or country of origin is possible. It also allows users to isolate Australian animals by
looking at our region in the world. This site provides the basic breed knowledge that is needed for every student of Agriculture, and is assumed

pertinent to Agriculture. Seasonal climate outlooks for all areas in Australia are available. These can provide students with support for their farm case

a large number of agricultural issues, from cane toads and weeds in school gardens to bovine spongiform encephalopathy. This site would be very useful

ABSTRACT
The Sunbeam Future Farmers program, in conjunction with Rural Skills Australia, is an initiative to give young people living in rural Australia a start in the farming industry and to secure the future of the Australian farming community. Maintaining the skills base within the horticultural industry is becoming increasingly important. This program is designed to match farmers with young Australians considering or participating in a full, part time or school-based apprenticeship in horticulture. Technology in Australia 1788 - 1988
Essentially the online edition of a book and accessed as such by chapters, this provides information about a wide variety of technologies. Several
chapters, particularly chapter one, are relevant to the Agriculture: Stage 6 syllabus (approved 1999). This begins with Aboriginal use
of resources. As this information is brief and simplified, with no obvious consultation with Aboriginal people, further resources and
consultation with the local Aboriginal community, would be needed to complement this aspect and provide the Aboriginal perspective. The first chapter
continues with early European agricultural technology, and follows the progression of agricultural practices to the present time, fitting in well with
several content requirements of the Preliminary and HSC courses. Chapters on food technology, irrigation, forestry, and textiles may also be useful
depending on areas of study. Teachers could develop a set of questions for students to answer from the site. It is a helpful resource as some of the

a little complex in places. The site contains an intensive explanation of wool production and testing technology, along with a brief look at contextual
