Introduction
Plant hormones are a group of naturally occurring, organic substances that influence physiological processes at low concentrations in plants. The processes influenced consist mainly of growth, differentiation and development, though other processes, such as stomatal movement, may also be affected.
Activity 1
To complete this activity you will need to do the following:
- Access information about plant hormones by using the following link:

- Now open Microsoft Word and create a table like the one that is shown below. Choose landscape from the page layout menu and adjust the column widths so that the table looks as follows.
- Type in the headings as shown.

- Add rows for ethylene, cytokinins and abscisic acid to your table.
- Now, using the web pages you have opened, summarise the roles of plant hormones in plant growth and development. Concentrate your efforts on the commercial application of plant hormones to bring about improvements in plant production. There is a lot of information here. You don’t have to remember it all – choose what you perceive to be the most important for each hormone. Use the bulleting function to make a dot point summary for each hormone.
- As an alternative, construct the table as described above, print it (after adjusting the row sizes accordingly) and hand write your responses.
Activity 2
Alternative method of summarising information
Another way to summarise and learn this information is to construct a mind map for each of the hormones. Start with a blank piece of paper and draw a circle in the middle of it. Write the name of the hormone you are dealing with inside the circle. Use a series of arrows that radiate to relevant sub-headings to summarise the information about the hormone.
