Gary Morgan: technical officer (Scientific)

Age: 38

Employer: University of Western Sydney (Hawkesbury campus)

Greg MorganJob description: Manage laboratory facilities in the School of Science, Food and Horticulture. These labs are used by research scientists, postgraduate and undergraduate students. I also provide resources for the undergraduate students.

Qualifications: Biological Technician's Certificate (NSW TAFE) Associate Diploma of Applied Science( Bio Techniques ) (NSW TAFE) Adv Certificate in Electronics and Communication (NSW TAFE OTEN)

Best thing about the job: Being involved in leading edge research in Horticulture. It is very rewarding to meet the challenge of providing technical resources where they were not previously available.

Worst thing about the job: Going to Flemington Fresh Produce Markets early in the morning to buy bulk fruit and vegetables for undergraduate practicals. The forklift drivers are Kamikazes!

Strangest thing you've had to do: Dress up as an elf for the University's Open Day!

When you were at school, did you plan to do this type of work?
When I was at school, my main interest was agriculture, so I did all the agriculture I could from Year 7 to Year 12. My plan was to study Agriculture at Hawkesbury Ag. College (now UWS Hawkesbury Campus) then get a job as an Extension Officer with the NSW Department of Agriculture. Unfortunately I wasn't successful in gaining entry into the degree so I went to TAFE instead. Years later I realised that I could have attained a degree at UNE Armidale.
Ironically, I ended up working at UWS Hawkesbury.
